Supporting falls prevention in Redbridge’s assistive technology pilot

MiiCare is excited to be one of four technology partners in the London Borough of Redbridge’s (LBR) 18-month pilot to reduce falls for elderly residents. Led by LBR in collaboration with Care City and funded by the Government’s Adult Social Care Technology Fund, this initiative deploys assistive technology across care settings, including care homes, extra care facilities and reablement services. As part of this collaborative effort, MiiCare is being tested in extra care facilities and via the reablement service, providing key technology and support, contributing to the broader goal of enhancing safety and independence for older adults.

Understanding the Impact of Falls Among Older Adults

Falls are one of the most pressing health concerns for the elderly, with one in three people over 65 and one in two people over 80 experiencing falls each year. These incidents can have severe consequences, including reduced mobility, long-term illness, and loss of independence. Redbridge ranks high among London boroughs in fall-related incidents, which places significant pressure on emergency services. This pilot aims to reduce the frequency and severity of falls, ultimately enhancing the quality of life for elderly residents and easing the strain on healthcare resources.

“We are immensely proud to be leading this transformative assistive technology pilot, our unique health and social care partnership provides us with an exceptional advantage in ensuring that our residents receive an exceptional service. Our residents are at the heart of our approach, we have engaged and listened to our residents in the development and implementation of the pilot.  As an Occupational Therapist, nothing gives me more pleasure than considering solutions that enable people to be more independent, have a better quality of life and support their goals and outcomes.

We are at this stage, focusing on falls prevention and medication adherence by taking a proactive approach in how we support and empower people to live more safely and independently, this will also benefit the current pressures on our health and Social Care services. Our collaboration with Care City, MiiCare and other tech providers enables us to explore how technology can deliver meaningful improvements in care, making a real difference in the lives of our residents”  Shangle Khanom, Head of Service, London Borough of Redbridge

Transforming Adult Social Care in Redbridge: Assistive Technology Pilot to Enhance Care and Prevent Falls

Redbridge Council's 18-month Assistive Technology Pilot, part of its broader programme, explores how care technology can enhance care services, support staff, and reduce costs through early intervention. As Implementation Partner, Care City leads by introducing fall detection technologies across care homes, extra-care facilities, and residents’ homes, in collaboration with the local falls team and reablement services. The pilot's impact, including fall reduction, is being independently evaluated in partnership with the DHSC and partners Apteligen.

Care City will also develop an Assistive Technology (AT) catalogue featuring tailored, cost-efficient solutions informed by the pilot's insights. To raise awareness, tech showcase events are being hosted for staff and residents. Additionally, Care City supports fostering a cultural shift within adult social care, addressing attitudes, bridging digital skills gaps, and exploring ethical considerations like AI's role, ensuring technology adoption enhances care outcomes and delivery.

“Care technology will succeed when it provides meaningful value to residents who draw on care and support while empowering care teams to deliver quality care without disrupting their work. In partnership with frontline social care and health teams in Redbridge, we are exploring the potential of innovative assistive technologies, engaging residents to understand their lived experiences with these tools. Working in the open and learning together, our goal is to develop a sustainable care technology model in Redbridge that enhances residents’ quality of life while reducing costs.” Matt Skinner, CEO, Care City
