MiiCare wins Innovate UK grant as part of research consortium
MiiCare is pleased to announce that a consortium including University of Kent, East Kent Hospital University, Graham Care and Avante Care and Support has won an grant from Innovate UK, the UK’s innovation agency, to detect the likelihood of a fall based on gait analysis.
MiiCare has created a digital companion called Monica that is placed in the home of an older adult or a room of a residential Care Home. Monica collects health data from wearable devices and sensors and then shares it with their relatives and care providers plus building a behavioural model of the older adult. This allows Monica to raise alerts if a health event is detected and reminders for regular tasks such as hydration
The grant enables the MiiCare consortium to extend the capabilities of MONICA to monitor the acoustic signals of a person’s gait to better predict the likelihood of a fall. Dr Christos Efstratiou a Lecturer at the School of Engineering and Digital Arts (EDA) and his team, will build key software components that capture and analyse the data sent from the wearable device worn by patients to the mobile MiiCare application
MONICA has been piloted in a number of environments such as Age UK Medway, Bristol City Council & RB Care., and has demonstrated a number of benefits to Older adults, care providers and family members. MiiCare have several awards and acknowledgements such as Microsoft AI for Good, EIT Health Catapult.
